Sudan Finance Minister Meets IMF Official to Discuss Technical Support and Debt Relief

Khartoum: Dr. Jibril Ibrahim, Sudan’s Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, announced a productive meeting with Mr. Jihad Azour, Director of the Middle East, North Africa, Central Asia, and Caucasus Department at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The meeting took place during the annual joint meetings of Arab financial institutions.

According to Sudan News Agency, Dr. Ibrahim shared through a Facebook post that the discussions centered on enhancing the IMF’s technical support for Sudan. The focus is on accelerating the digital transformation of key financial institutions such as the Ministry of Finance, the Central Bank of Sudan, and the Central Bureau of Statistics, aimed at improving efficiency, strengthening transparency, and promoting better governance.

Dr. Ibrahim also mentioned that they explored ways for Sudan to re-engage with the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) initiative for debt relief. This initiative is seen as a crucial step in Sudan’s economic reform efforts and in reducing external debt burdens. Further discussions are scheduled to continue at the upcoming IMF meetings in Washington, D.C., later this month.
