Sudan and UN Discuss Cooperation on Human Rights Mechanisms

Geneva: Minister of Justice Dr. Muawia Osman Mohamed Khair has met with the Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations for Human Rights, Ms. Ilze Brands Kehris, at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, on the sidelines of his participation in the 58th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva. The discussions focused on enhancing cooperation and coordination between Sudan and the United Nations, particularly concerning human rights mechanisms.

According to Sudan News Agency, Minister Khair provided an overview of the current human rights situation in Sudan, highlighting the judiciary’s efforts to establish justice, enforce the rule of law, and combat impunity. He emphasized the importance of protecting civilians and addressing human rights violations and abuses of international humanitarian law. Furthermore, he shared updates on the reopening of courts, prosecution offices, and police services in the states of Al-Gezira and Khartoum following the expulsion of rebel militia, and the restoration of elec
tronic records for the Ministries of Justice and Interior. In addition, he mentioned the establishment of an electronic platform for receiving lawsuits, which does not require adherence to territorial jurisdiction.

The Minister reiterated Sudan’s commitment to cooperating with the High Commissioner for Human Rights and delegating the appointed expert. He also discussed the roadmap announced by the President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council concerning arrangements for the interim period post-conflict.

Ms. Brands Kehris, representing the United Nations, expressed gratitude to the Sudanese government for facilitating the entry of the High Commissioner for Human Rights’ staff into Sudan and allowing them to resume their duties. She affirmed the United Nations’ willingness to collaborate with Sudan and conveyed her hopes for the nation’s return to stability and peace.
