Khartoum: Red Sea State Wali (Governor), Lt. Gen. Mustafa Mohamed Nour, on Thursday attended the launch of a Japan-funded community-support programme to reopen schools at Transit Primary School for Boys, in the presence of Japan’s Ambassador Kentaro Mizutani, education officials, and UNICEF representatives.
According to Sudan News Agency, the Wali highlighted that education in the state has continued to progress despite the impact of the war, crediting partnerships with UNICEF and the Government of Japan for this advancement. He revealed that 99 schools are in need of rehabilitation, and Japan and UNICEF have agreed to renovate 88 of these institutions. The Wali also acknowledged Japan’s broader support through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which includes providing sanitation equipment and training for state cleaning staff.
Japan’s Ambassador, Kentaro Mizutani, expressed pride in contributing to the rehabilitation of schools and advancing education reform. The state’s Director-General of Education remarked that schooling has persisted through a rotation system despite challenging circumstances. UNICEF confirmed that these strong partnerships have enabled children to return to classrooms that were previously used as shelters, which has been instrumental in securing a better future for them.
