Khartoum: Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Osman, representing the Director General of Police, and Dr. Awad Hamed, Head of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports in Khartoum State, inaugurated the Martyrs of Dignity Championship on Sunday. The tournament features 16 teams from various police departments and units. The opening match was a strong contest between the Central Reserve Forces and Customs teams at the Central Reserve Stadium in the Fatih Al-Aqliyeen suburb, south of Khartoum.
According to Sudan News Agency, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Othman, Head of the Guidance and Services Authority, discussed the evolving role of the Sudanese police in social responsibility, which now includes integration into civil society and participation in activities such as sports. He highlighted the support given by the police to civil society through two football teams, the Al-Qadarif Police team and the Al-Nusoor Omdurman team, which represent Sudan internationally. Othman emphasized the importance of the police's role in normalizing civilian life and reviving sports activities in Khartoum.
Othman also noted that the tournament aims to commemorate the martyrs of the Battle of Karameh and honor their families through this sporting event.
Major General Amir Abbas, Director of the General Directorate of Guidance and Activities, commended the role of sports in community building. He expressed enthusiasm for the launch of sports activities at the Central Reserve Stadium, a site of resilience that played a role in defeating the terrorist rebel militia. Abbas also hoped for renovations and upgrades to the stadium to meet technical standards required for hosting significant local tournaments.
Dr. Awad Hamed, representing the Higher Committee for the Rehabilitation of Khartoum Stadiums, extended gratitude to the Sudanese police for their efforts in maintaining national security and stability. During the tournament's opening, he announced plans to include the reserve stadium in a rehabilitation program to host Premier League matches next May.
Hamed emphasized that the tournament sends a message to the world affirming Khartoum's safety and stability.
