Kinshasa: The Ninth Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Great Lakes Region convened today at the People’s Palace in the Congolese capital, Kinshasa, with the participation of Member of the Transitional Sovereignty Council (TSC) and Assistant Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Lt. Gen. Eng. Ibrahim Jabir, who is leading Sudan’s delegation.
According to Sudan News Agency, Democratic Republic of Congo President F©lix Tshisekedi delivered the opening address after formally assuming the chairmanship of the current term from Angola’s President Joo Manuel Gon§alves Louren§o. Tshisekedi outlined his priorities for the term, which include upholding the independence and sovereignty of member states, promoting peace, development, and economic integration, restructuring the Great Lakes organization, and combating the illicit exploitation of regional resources and negative armed groups.
The UN Secretary-General’s Representative to the Great Lakes, Huang Xia, reaffirmed the United Nations’ support for the organization’s efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region. Meanwhile, the African Union’s (AU) representative, Sghir Mubarak, emphasized the AU’s commitment to peace, security, and development in the Great Lakes countries.
Lt. Gen. Ibrahim Jabir is scheduled to deliver Sudan’s address to the summit, which focuses on efforts to end conflicts across the region, particularly in Sudan.
