Khartoum Health Ministry Outlines Cholera Containment Efforts and Strategic Response Plan

Khartoum: Health teams at the Khartoum State Ministry of Health have outlined the major challenges encountered in controlling the cholera outbreak that surfaced during the liberation of Al-Saliha suburb in Omdurman last May. The challenges centered primarily on the collapse of infrastructure and widespread environmental contamination, particularly polluted drinking water caused by militia attacks on electricity networks and water-supply systems.

According to Sudan News Agency, these findings were presented during a two-day workshop organized by the Federal Ministry of Health, in cooperation with the Khartoum State Ministry of Health and with international support. The event brought together 35 specialists and senior officials.

The workshop produced four comprehensive reports forming a strategic health response plan for cholera control. Key recommendations included establishing an emergency coordination council, securing dedicated emergency funding at the state level, and strengthening medical supply chains. The plan also highlighted the need to expand community surveillance, enforce public-health regulations, and reinforce vaccination campaigns-which had previously achieved 101% coverage-alongside continuous staff training and enhanced water-testing capabilities to better confront future epidemics.
