Irrigation Minister Reassures Progress of Maintenance in Al-Gezira Scheme

Khartoum: Acting Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources, Eng. Al-Daw Abdel-Rahman, inspected on Sunday the progress of summer maintenance work on the irrigation system in several sections of the Al-Gezira Scheme. This includes the irrigation sections of Haj Abdullah, Al-Musallamiya, Wad Al-Naw, Al-Basatna, Tabat, and West Al-Managil, as well as Shalei, Mustafa Gurashi, Al-Shawal Canal, and Major Al-Hewaiwa.

According to Sudan News Agency, the Minister surveyed the assembly of machinery and operations focused on repairing cracks in the main canals, reinforcing bridges, and removing silt and weeds. He expressed pride and appreciation for the efforts of engineers, technicians, and skilled workers in repairing fractures, fixing gates, and mending regulators, bridges, and crossings. These repairs follow the systematic vandalism of Al-Gezira Scheme’s irrigation system by the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia. The Minister emphasized that these efforts are essential for releasing irrigation water from the main canals by early June, aiming for the success of the new 2025-2026 agricultural season.

Furthermore, the Minister called on the farming sector to intensify its efforts in preparing agricultural lands to ensure the success of the agricultural season, contribute to food security, and support the national economy.

For his part, the Director General of Irrigation Operations, Engineer Mufaddal Al-Tayib, announced that more than 70% of summer maintenance has been completed. He reiterated his directorate’s commitment to finishing maintenance work before the scheduled release of irrigation water from the canals in early June.
