Health Minister Meets WHO Director-General

Khartoum: At the conclusion of his participation in the World Health Assembly, Minister of Health Dr. Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim met on Saturday with the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Tedros Adhanom. The Minister thanked the WHO Director-General for his visit and continued support for Sudan.

According to Sudan News Agency, the Minister provided an update on the health and humanitarian situation, requesting further support for delivering health services to areas controlled by the militias and for more support and supplies to combat epidemics, especially cholera.

Dr. Haitham also discussed the issue of funding shortages and the need to prioritize Sudan in the coming period, given the current circumstances. He emphasized the importance of opening more channels of communication with donors at the regional level, particularly concerning the health backup project with the King Salman Center for Relief and Humanitarian Action (KSRelief).

The Minister requested the adoption of some priority projects, such as developing a strategy for rebuilding the health system after the war and rehabilitating significant institutions like the Public Health Laboratory (STAC) and the Mycetoma Center, which have a notable health impact at both regional and international levels.

For his part, Dr. Tedros expressed gratitude towards the Sudanese government and the Ministry of Health for their efforts. He promised to increase efforts and engage with donors and UN partners regarding Sudan’s crisis in terms of funding and service delivery. Dr. Tedros also directed the urgent dispatch of necessary medicines and consumables for epidemics, focusing on cholera and dengue fever.
