Port Sudan: Minister of Health, Dr. Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim, met with the International Director of Humanitarian Affairs at the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Ms. Shoki Arkaki, and her delegation at the quarantine Hall in Portsudan. The meeting focused on the health situation in Sudan amidst the challenges posed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) rebellion and the resulting violations affecting citizens, particularly women.
According to Sudan News Agency, Dr. Ibrahim discussed the health challenges in the country and acknowledged UNFPA’s contributions to maternal and child health support. He highlighted the significance of solar energy projects to enhance health services and praised the Fund’s efforts in providing maternal health supplies, training healthcare staff, developing treatment protocols, and monitoring supplies for cases of rape resulting from the ongoing violations.
Ms. Shoki Arkaki outlined UNFPA’s initiatives to support Sudan’s medical infrastructure, which include providing refrigerated vehicles, containers for medicine transport, life-saving drugs, and reproductive health medicines. She reaffirmed UNFPA’s commitment to strengthening Sudan’s health system, citing a 2025 budget requirement of $26 million. Key areas of focus include training midwives and enhancing maternal and newborn health programs.
Ms. Arkaki also emphasized the UNFPA’s role in supporting national efforts to combat sexual assault, working within the National Human Rights Mechanism to ensure health and psychological support for victims, and promoting the well-being of women and girls in Sudan.
