Governor of North Darfur Allocates 350 Million Pounds for El Fasher Food Banks

El Fasher: The governor of North Darfur State, Al-Hafiz Bakhit Mohamed, has announced a significant financial contribution to support food banks in El Fasher, as part of the state government’s efforts to address the economic challenges arising from the ongoing conflict. The city has been under siege by the Al-Dagalo militia for over a year, leading to a dire humanitarian situation.

According to Sudan News Agency, the governor has allocated 350 million pounds to bolster the operation of collective kitchens, known as takayas, within El Fasher’s neighborhoods. These funds are intended to enable the hospices to fulfill their social responsibilities towards displaced and affected citizens. Bakhit emphasized the urgency of implementing these programs swiftly due to the immediate needs of the city’s residents.

Governor Bakhit also highlighted the ongoing efforts to alleviate the impact of the so-called starvation war imposed by the militia. He acknowledged the challenges faced by the state due to limited resources but assured that the government would maximize its efforts to support the resilient population of El Fasher. Bakhit commended those involved in organizing food and water distributions, noting the display of solidarity and compassion among the people of Darfur.

The State of North Darfur, through the Ministry of Social Welfare and Development, has been actively providing direct social support to El Fasher’s neighborhoods. Initiatives have included food donation programs, drinking water supply, and special programs during the holy month of Ramadan. Furthermore, efforts have been made to address the displacement resulting from attacks on Zamzam camp, focusing on ensuring access to clean drinking water, maintaining health services, and providing shelter for the displaced. The social program also aims to support the city’s notable figures and civil service pensioners.
