FAO Director in Sennar to Provide Improved Seeds to 100,000 Small Farmers

Sennar: The Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid in Sennar State, Mohamed Abdel-Fattah Badi, met with the Director of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Dr. Mohamed Ahmed Tibin, alongside the Acting Minister of Health, Dr. Ibrahim Al-Awad Ahmed. Badi emphasized that the meeting was part of preparations for the agricultural season, noting the commission’s commitment to supporting farmers and aiding the agricultural season. He highlighted that agriculture is the key to stability and development, and Sennar State has abundant natural resources that need optimal exploitation and investment.

According to Sudan News Agency, the Director of the FAO Office revealed plans to distribute improved seeds to 100,000 small farmers. This includes 1,000 tons of crops and 50 tons of vegetable seeds. Additionally, the FAO aims to provide 30 farmers with solar energy units as part of preparations for the new agricultural season.

Tibin noted that these initiatives will be carried out through several national organizations. The FAO is also working to localize seed cultivation by planting 180 acres as demonstration farms for small farmers, with oversight from the Agricultural Research Corporation and the National Committee for Improved Seeds. The project specifically targets the localities of Al-Suki and Al-Dindir.

Tibin expressed gratitude to the FAO Country Director for his support of agricultural development efforts in Sudan.
