Director of Geological Research Highlights Minerals Sector’s Major Contribution to State Treasury

Khartoum: The General Authority for Geological Research, serving as the technical arm of the Ministry of Minerals, has made a significant announcement regarding the minerals sector’s contribution to Sudan’s economy. The sector has been credited with providing 60% of the total foreign currency deposited into the state treasury, making up an equivalent proportion of the country’s exports.

According to Sudan News Agency, the Director General of the Authority, Geologist Counselor Ahmed Haroun Al-Tom, outlined a strategic five-year plan (2025-2030) focused on advancing research and exploration activities. This plan aims to enhance the development of various types of minerals, including industrial minerals essential for reconstruction, as well as energy, radioactive, and precious minerals.

Al-Tom commended the pivotal role played by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Minerals during her recent visit to Russia, emphasizing the robust economic ties between the two nations. He highlighted how the ministry intends to leverage these relations for training and capacity-building opportunities, alongside gaining technical expertise from Russian companies. He also noted that several major Russian firms have shown interest in investing in Sudan’s mining sector. Reports received by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Minerals featured geological and chemical maps of the eastern sector of the country, underscoring the potential for future development.
