El fasher: The Public Prosecution Office has released a clarification addressing the misinformation circulating on social media regarding the reported establishment of an investigation committee by entities not connected with the Public Prosecution Office. This clarification comes in the wake of the violent events in El Fasher, where the incursion by rebel militia led to acts of murder, looting, rape, and the forced displacement of civilians.
According to Sudan News Agency, the Public Prosecution Office emphasized its exclusive legal authority to form investigation committees for such crimes, as outlined in the 2019 Constitutional Document, Article (30) of the 2017 Public Prosecution Office Law, and Article (20) of the 1991 Criminal Procedure Code. The statement underscored that the responsibility of investigating and registering criminal cases is solely within its jurisdiction, cautioning other entities against attempting to assume this role and urging the public to avoid spreading unverified information.
The Public Prosecution Office further clarified that the Attorney General, who also leads the National Committee for Investigating Crimes and Violations of National and International Humanitarian Law, has initiated criminal charges against those implicated immediately after the incidents. The committee has begun comprehensive investigations, gathering witness testimonies and evidence that confirm the involvement of individuals within the rebel forces. These investigations are ongoing.
The Public Prosecution reiterated its authority in conducting investigations and filing criminal charges, urging all parties to exercise caution and refrain from disseminating unverified information.
