Khartoum: Sudan’s Permanent Representative to Geneva, Ambassador Hassan Hamid, addressed a high-level joint briefing organized by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) at the UN headquarters in Geneva, with the participation of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and M©decins Sans Fronti¨res (MSF).
According to Sudan News Agency, Ambassador Hamid reviewed the overall humanitarian and health situation in the country, focusing on the conditions in El-Fashir, Dilling, and Kadugli. He condemned the silence of the international community in the face of the atrocities and crimes committed by the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, including the use of siege and starvation as weapons to kill or forcibly displace civilians, in defiance of international appeals, including UN Security Council Resolution 2736, which the rebel militia has disregarded.
The Ambassador also highlighted the rising rates of voluntary return of displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees, referring to a recent IOM report that documented the return of over two million people last month to areas restored to government control. This was noted as a reflection of the people’s confidence in their government and national institutions, particularly the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). He stressed that none of those returning had gone to areas still under the control of the rebel militia.
The Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva discussed the government’s ongoing efforts to provide urgent assistance to returnees, including the delivery of basic services. He urged humanitarian organizations to launch immediate projects to support these efforts, emphasizing the government’s priority on restoring essential services, rehabilitating facilities destroyed by the terrorist militia, and preparing the country to receive returnees.
Ambassador Hamid also addressed the health situation, citing the systematic targeting and vandalization of the national health system. He called on specialized international organizations to support the significant efforts being made by the Federal Ministry of Health to combat the spread of dengue fever in several states.
Ahead of the briefing, the Sudanese Mission in Geneva had submitted lists of urgent needs related to dengue response and rainy-season emergencies to the heads of relevant international organizations.
In conclusion, the Sudan’s Permanent Representative to UN in Geneva reaffirmed the government’s commitment to accelerating all procedures necessary to facilitate the work of international humanitarian organizations operating in Sudan.
