Geneva: The Federal Minister of Health, Haitham Mohammed Ibrahim, addressed the ministerial session of the 79th World Health Assembly at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, affirming Sudan's commitment to continuing recovery efforts and rebuilding the health system despite the major challenges imposed by the war.
According to Sudan News Agency, the minister emphasized Sudan's participation in the session under the theme 'One World for Health,' amidst one of its most complex humanitarian and health crises due to a proxy war initiated by the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia. The conflict has targeted health facilities and medical personnel, leading to the shutdown of many hospitals and worsening the humanitarian situation.
The minister outlined Sudan's steady progress toward recovery by rehabilitating health institutions, strengthening primary healthcare, and enhancing immunization programmes and emergency response systems. He praised the resilience of Sudanese healthcare workers, known as the 'White Army,' for their dedication in maintaining essential health services during these challenging times.
He also highlighted the designation of 20 April as National Health Day, reinforcing health as a national priority. Furthermore, he announced the achievement of declaring Sudan cholera-free and expressed hopes for the 'Malaria-Free Sudan' initiative by Prime Minister Kamil Idris.
The minister concluded by urging the World Health Organization, international partners, and donors to support Sudan's efforts in transitioning from emergency response to sustainable health partnerships, enhancing both regional and international health security.
