Darfur: Governor of Darfur Region Minni Arko Minnawi held talks with Ms. Mirjana Spoljaric, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), focusing on militia violations against civilians and the resulting humanitarian crisis, particularly in Darfur.
According to Sudan News Agency, the Governor expressed appreciation for the ICRC's humanitarian role under complex conditions, calling for intensified coordination during this critical phase. He briefed the meeting on the humanitarian situation, noting that Sudan is facing the world's largest displacement crisis due to systematic forced displacement aimed at demographic change, particularly in Darfur.
He highlighted the dire situation in El-Fashir, where militia control has led to blocked humanitarian access, acute shortages of food, medicine, and water, and a collapse of health services. The Governor of Darfur Region urged the ICRC to intensify efforts to access detention facilities, reach all detainees and forcibly disappeared persons, and scale up medical support for war-wounded individuals.
Ms. Spoljaric reaffirmed the ICRC's commitment to expanding humanitarian access and ensuring compliance with international humanitarian law despite operational challenges. Both sides stressed the importance of sustained coordination to enhance humanitarian response in Sudan, especially in Darfur.
