Khartoum: The Ministries of Industry and Trade, and Agriculture and Irrigation, convened a high-level coordination meeting to explore methods to boost Sudan's agricultural exports. The meeting was attended by the General Manager of the Agricultural Bank of Sudan and a representative from the Central Bank of Sudan. This gathering emphasized the necessity for coordinated efforts to realize the vision of 'Sudan as the World's Food Basket.'
According to Sudan News Agency, Minister of Industry and Trade, Ms. Mahasin Ali Yagoub, highlighted during the meeting that Sudan has significant agricultural potential, with abundant fertile land and water resources, positioning it as a leading agricultural nation in Africa and the Arab world. She urged the utilization of these resources to promote the production of export crops.
Ms. Yagoub elaborated that the Ministry's future plans are centered on supporting and promoting production and agro-processing for export. These efforts aim to enhance the value of agricultural products, generate foreign currency, stabilize the trade balance, bolster the national currency, and strengthen the national economy.
Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Professor Ismat Gurashi, remarked that agriculture is the cornerstone of Sudan's economy, despite challenges such as disrupted production chains due to conflict and the withdrawal of areas in Kordofan and Darfur from production. He confirmed that the Ministry is committed to increasing production both vertically and horizontally and will enhance coordination with the Ministry of Industry and Trade to develop policies that incentivize investment in the agricultural sector, especially given the rising global demand and increasing food prices.
