Cairo: Minister of Culture, Information, Antiquities and Tourism, Khalid Al-Eisir, met in Cairo with the Secretary-General of the General Union of Sudanese Journalists, Salah Omar Al-Sheikh, to discuss ways to develop the union's work and enhance its role in regulating the profession and improving the media working environment.According to Sudan News Agency, the minister affirmed the strength of the partnership between the ministry and the union, describing it as a legitimate professional body, and stressed the importance of unifying the press sector under its umbrella to strengthen its national role amid current challenges.The minister further explained that the ministry is working on updating the 2009 Press and Publications Act, introducing dedicated provisions for digital journalism in the new legislation. This initiative is being undertaken in consultation with journalists, aiming to reinforce press freedom while ensuring adherence to professional standards.He also emphasized the ministry's focus on improving the economic conditions of journalists and strengthening the status of the press as the fourth estate. Al-Eisir stressed that journalism is a high profession based on ethics, credibility, and public service.
