Geneva: Sudan’s Permanent Representative in Geneva, Ambassador Hassan Hamid, has refuted claims made by some non-governmental organizations during the Human Rights Council meetings, alleging the use of chemical weapons by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).
According to Sudan News Agency, Ambassador Hamid dismissed these accusations as fabrications, adopted from the narrative of the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia. He criticized the organizations for exploiting their participation in the forum to support the militia’s claims, including the alleged use of chemical weapons by the SAF. Ambassador Hamid questioned the silence of these organizations on atrocities committed by militias, such as the torture and death of Gisma, the siege of El-Fashir, and the shelling of mosques and houses of worship.
Ambassador Hamid expressed regret over the descent of some organizations to promoting allegations based on unverified sources. He described this as a politicization of NGO work and a violation of Resolution 1996/31, which governs NGO activities. Sudan, he noted, intends to take action through the United Nations Committee on NGOs against these entities.
Furthermore, Ambassador Hamid reaffirmed Sudan’s commitment to the Chemical Weapons Convention, emphasizing that Sudan is a principal party to it. He detailed the formation of a national committee to investigate the allegations, involving various ministries and institutions, including the National Authority for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. This committee, he said, is making progress through scientific methods and professional standards, with its findings expected to disprove the accusations.
Ambassador Hamid also criticized the organizations for raising these allegations in the Human Rights Council, questioning their appropriateness and indicating a political motive aligned with the rebel militia. He concluded by reiterating that the Sudanese Army operates with the support of the Sudanese people, dismissing the claims as baseless fabrications.
