Khartoum: A political coalition spearheaded by Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has declared the establishment of a parallel government, a development that raises fears of further division in a nation already embroiled in over two years of civil war.
According to Nam News Network, the Sudan Founding Alliance’s leadership has named Mohamed Hassan Al-Taishi as Prime Minister of the newly formed Peace Government. This announcement was made by the alliance’s spokesperson, Alaa El Din Nugud, during a televised statement broadcasted via Telegram.
The RSF’s commander, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, has been appointed as President of the Presidential Council, the highest authority in this new government structure. Meanwhile, Abdelaziz Adam Al-Hilu, leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), has been designated as Vice President of the Presidential Council.
Nugud emphasized that the existence of two governments could solidify geographic divisions within Sudan, potentially leading to a permanent partition similar to situations in other nations. This concern comes after the RSF signed a founding charter with various political and armed factions in February, laying the foundation for this alternate administration.
The RSF currently maintains control over much of the Darfur region in western Sudan and parts of the Kordofan region, highlighting its significant influence and territorial reach in the ongoing conflict.
