New York: Sudan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Al-Harith Idris, announced that approximately 2 million refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) have returned to their homes as of this month. This development follows the liberation of the states of Al-Gezira and Sennar, along with significant areas in Khartoum and the White Nile, by the armed forces and supporting forces.
According to Sudan News Agency, Ambassador Idris shared these statistics during Sudan’s address to the Security Council on Thursday. He projected that the number of returnees is expected to increase to 5 million by the end of June. Idris highlighted the government’s extensive efforts to support the returnees, focusing on urgent needs coordination with international humanitarian organizations like OCHA. These efforts include projects aimed at rehabilitating schools, higher education institutions, universities, and maintaining critical infrastructure such as police stations, water, and electricity grids, as well as health centers.
In his address, Sudan’s Permanent UN Envoy also mentioned that the Minister of Finance, Dr. Gebreil Ibrahim, had presented a comprehensive vision to Abdullah Al-Dada, the Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations. This vision outlines the government’s priorities within the Development Program, which include combating violence, addressing IDP issues, and ensuring community protection. Other key areas of focus are digital transformation, addressing climate change impacts on the economy, financing the energy and communications sectors, developing value chains, and supporting microfinance projects.
