Sudan Calls at African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights Conference to Confront External Role Fueling War

Banjul: The Sudanese delegation participating in the 87th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights, held in the Gambian capital Banjul, called on the Chairperson of the Commission to address the negative external role supporting the war against Sudan, which has led to a deterioration in human rights conditions, stressing the importance of finding purely African and consensual solutions.

According to Sudan News Agency, this call was made during a meeting between the delegation and Mr. Idrissa Sow, Chairperson of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights under the African Union, on Wednesday. The Sudanese delegation included Legal Adviser Yassir Sayid Ahmed Al-Hassan, Rapporteur of the National Mechanism for Human Rights, and Ambassador Al-Zein Ibrahim Hussein, Sudan's Permanent Representative to the African Union.

The delegation provided an overview of the legal and institutional frameworks through which the Government of Sudan operates in the field of human rights protection and promotion via the National Human Rights Mechanism, chaired by the Minister of Justice. This mechanism includes all relevant bodies and agencies concerned with human rights, women and child protection, and persons with disabilities, as well as judicial bodies and law enforcement agencies, in addition to the independent National Commission for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights.

They also outlined the state's efforts to support this commission despite the ongoing challenges, in order to enhance its efficiency in addressing human rights issues, particularly in light of the grave violations committed by the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia.

The delegation highlighted Sudan's significant contributions to joint African action through the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights and other mechanisms, while reiterating its reservations regarding any joint investigation involving the African Union mission and any external mission from outside the continent, calling instead for strengthened African ownership.

In response, Mr. Idrissa Sow welcomed the Sudanese delegation's remarks and expressed agreement with most of the points raised, affirming that they would receive due attention from the Commission. He also stressed the importance of maintaining proper conduct, solidarity, and consultative solutions, emphasizing the Commission's commitment to supporting stability in Sudan and standing with its people.
