Baku: The capital of Azerbaijan, Baku, hosted Friday the launch of the Joint Technical Committee between the Republic of Sudan and the Republic of Azerbaijan, within the framework of advancing bilateral relations and expanding prospects for joint cooperation, particularly in the economic, trade, and investment sectors, based on directives and understandings reached between the leaderships of the two countries.
According to Sudan News Agency, the Sudanese delegation is headed by Undersecretary of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, Magdi Mohamed Abdel Latif, with the participation of representatives from several ministries and economic institutions. The Azerbaijani side is led by Deputy Minister of Economy, Elnur Aliyev.
The meetings explored pathways to advance technical and economic cooperation. The Sudanese side put forward a comprehensive project matrix spanning the energy, natural gas, and petrochemicals sectors, alongside thermal and hydropower generation, solar energy, as well as mining and road infrastructure.
The committee's proceedings commenced with a meeting between the Sudanese delegation and the Azerbaijani Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. Discussions addressed the trajectory of bilateral relations and means of supporting and strengthening them across various sectors, in light of existing understandings between the two countries' leaderships. Both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to elevating bilateral cooperation to serve mutual interests and contribute to stability and development in both countries.
The Sudanese side also briefed counterparts on developments in the country, including field advances achieved by the armed forces and government efforts to restore stability and advance recovery. The briefing further highlighted the peace initiative presented by Sudan before the United Nations Security Council as a national framework for addressing the crisis and preparing conditions for a comprehensive political process.
The visit included a field tour to the Alat Free Economic Zone in Baku, where the Sudanese delegation reviewed the zone's experience in developing infrastructure and logistics services, as well as the investment-friendly environment it provides. The delegation expressed interest in leveraging this model to support reconstruction efforts and stimulate economic growth in Sudan.
Both sides stressed the importance of sustained coordination and consultation, alongside intensified exchange visits, in a manner that reinforces the bilateral partnership and propels it toward broader horizons.
These meetings come amid growing momentum in cooperation between the two countries, alongside preparations to sign seven new agreements in economic, investment, and cultural fields. These agreements are expected to reinforce the legal and regulatory framework for cooperation, facilitate investment flows and trade exchange, and support education, culture, and knowledge exchange, opening wider prospects for future collaboration between Sudan and Azerbaijan.
