New York: Amid a backdrop of escalating global conflicts and humanitarian crises, the United Nations Secretary-General urged the Security Council to strengthen multilateral cooperation and diplomatic efforts to address the pressing issues facing the world today. The call to action came during an open debate convened by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar of Pakistan, focusing on the critical connection between international peace and multilateralism.
According to EMM, the debate highlighted the foundational purpose of the United Nations, established 80 years ago to prevent war and promote peaceful resolution of disputes. The Secretary-General emphasized the alarming disregard for international laws, including human rights, refugee, and humanitarian laws, which are being violated without accountability amid growing geopolitical divides and conflicts.
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza was underscored as a stark example of these challenges, with the Secretary-General noting the severe death, destruction, and rising malnourishment. Israeli military operations have further compounded the crisis, impacting UN facilities and compromising the humanitarian system’s ability to function effectively.
The discourse extended beyond Gaza, addressing global hotspots like Ukraine, the Sahel, Sudan, Haiti, and Myanmar, where conflicts rage and international law is frequently overlooked. The Secretary-General stressed the enduring power of diplomacy to halt violence and instability, urging the Security Council to act as a catalyst for peace and cooperation.
Highlighting successful multilateral efforts, such as the Black Sea Initiative and various international conferences, the Secretary-General called for renewed commitment to the multilateral problem-solving framework.
