New york: The State of Qatar has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to mediation, dialogue, and preventive diplomacy as essential strategies to support peaceful initiatives aimed at reducing tensions and maintaining international peace and security. This declaration was made by Her Excellency Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, Qatar's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, during the UN General Assembly session on 'Strengthening the role of mediation in the peaceful settlement of disputes, conflict prevention and resolution'.
According to Qatar News Agency, Her Excellency emphasized that mediation remains one of the most effective tools for peacefully resolving disputes, preventing their occurrence, and fostering sustainable peace. She highlighted that mediation is a core component of preventive diplomacy and conflict resolution, with an increasing need for enhancement due to the rising complexity of conflicts in the modern technological era. The world is currently experiencing the highest number of armed conflicts since the United Nations was established.
Her Excellency expressed pride in Qatar's longstanding role in mediation, stating that preventive diplomacy, mediation, and peaceful conflict resolution are fundamental to its foreign policy, guided by constitutional principles and relevant UN resolutions. She noted Qatar's collaborative mediation endeavors with Egypt, the United States, and Turkiye, which led to the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip signed in October of the previous year. She stressed the importance of all parties adhering to their commitments, fully implementing the ceasefire, and ensuring the continuous flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Qatar's ongoing efforts in eastern Congo through the Doha Framework for a Comprehensive Peace Agreement, signed on November 15, 2025, were also highlighted. Additionally, Qatar's mediation in Afghanistan resulted in the peace agreement between the United States and the Taliban in February 2020.
Her Excellency reiterated Qatar's support for Pakistan's mediation between the United States and Iran, affirming its commitment to mediation efforts that promote de-escalation and contribute to regional security and stability.
