Khartoum: Prime Minister Dr. Kamal Idris on Wednesday urged UN Secretary-General António Guterres, via a phone call, to prompt the Security Council into taking immediate measures to lift the siege imposed by militias on civilians in El-Fashir.
According to Sudan News Agency, Dr. Idris emphasized that the blockade has resulted in a severe humanitarian situation, calling for actions beyond verbal condemnations. He reiterated Sudan’s willingness to work closely with the United Nations to reestablish peace and stability in the region.
During the conversation, UN Secretary-General Guterres congratulated Dr. Idris on his recent appointment and lauded his peace efforts. Guterres also commended General Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan, President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for facilitating safe humanitarian corridors. The Secretary-General expressed strong condemnation of the rebel militias, highlighting that the crisis is worsened by the influx of weapons and external
support.
Additionally, Dr. Idris proposed the relocation of all UN agencies and programs to Khartoum, a suggestion welcomed by Guterres as both natural and logical.
The call concluded with the Prime Minister expressing gratitude to the UN Secretary-General and looking forward to an in-person meeting in the near future.
