New york: On the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Prime Minister Dr. Kamil Idris of Sudan engaged in a significant meeting with President Ismail Omar Guelleh of Djibouti. The discussion aimed at strengthening political ties and seeking support in regional matters.
According to Sudan News Agency, the meeting was attended by high-level officials from both nations, including Sudan’s Minister of Culture, Information and Tourism Khalid Al-Issir and Djibouti’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdul-Gadir Hussein Omar. The talks underscored Sudan’s strategic outreach to key African leaders amidst its current geopolitical challenges.
Prime Minister Idris conveyed the greetings of General Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan, President of the Sovereignty Council, to President Guelleh, expressing heartfelt gratitude for Djibouti’s steadfast political support during Sudan’s ongoing conflict with the rebel Rapid Support Forces militia. The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of Djibouti’s influence in advocating for the reinstatement of Sudan’s membership in the African Union, highlighting Sudan’s foundational role in the organization and the broader benefits to the AU.
The meeting coincided with a separate session where Sudan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Mohy-Eddin Salim, engaged with the Latvian Foreign Minister to explore avenues for resuming European cooperation and garnering support at the UN Security Council.
The talks between Sudan and Djibouti concluded with a mutual agreement to convene an expanded meeting to further explore joint issues, marking a step forward in reinforcing bilateral ties and addressing regional concerns.
