New york: Prime Minister Dr. Kamil Idris met with United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohamed at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York, on the sidelines of his visit to the organization. The meeting was held at the Deputy Secretary-General's office.
According to Sudan News Agency, during the meeting, the Prime Minister provided a comprehensive briefing on the Sudanese government's peace initiative, affirming that the country's leadership and the civilian government are committed to achieving peace nationwide. He stressed that 2026 will be the 'Year of Peace in Sudan.'
Dr. Idris called on the United Nations and the Security Council to take positive steps to support and implement Sudan's peace initiative, which was presented to the Security Council the previous day. He underscored the government's full readiness to facilitate humanitarian access and protect civilians, expressing appreciation for all initiatives aimed at achieving peace in Sudan.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the United Nations and the Security Council must fulfill their responsibilities in supporting Sudan's peace initiative and advancing stability and peace in the country, warning that failure to support the initiative would constitute a violation of the UN Charter and international humanitarian law.
For her part, Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohamed highlighted the importance of strengthening cooperation between Sudan and the United Nations in the coming phase, enhancing partnership to support peace and stability, facilitating humanitarian assistance, mobilizing international support, and advancing peace efforts. She also stressed the importance of Sudan's cooperation with African institutions, notably IGAD and the African Union, to drive the peace and stability process.
Prime Minister Idris commended the role of the United Nations in Sudan and the achievements made in this regard, reaffirming the Sudanese government's commitment to removing all impediments facing the UN and its staff in carrying out their duties during the coming period. He also expressed appreciation for the UN's continued commitment to supporting Sudan.
The Deputy UN Secretary-General, in turn, reaffirmed the United Nations' keenness to continue coordination with the Sudanese government and to support its efforts toward peace and sustainable development.
