Khartoum: The Chairman of Sudan’s National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR), Jumaa Al-Wakil, has urged the international community to assume its legal and humanitarian responsibilities concerning violations committed by the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia against civilians, which include killing, rape, mass displacement, and deliberate starvation.
According to Sudan News Agency, during a meeting with Radwan Nuwaiser, the designated expert on the human rights situation in Sudan, Al-Wakil highlighted the purpose of Nuwaiser’s visit as an assessment of the country’s situation. The meeting assured Sudan’s full commitment to international human rights agreements and conventions, having ratified seven out of nine.
Al-Wakil explained that discussions during the meeting included the delivery of humanitarian aid and relief to areas besieged by the RSF militia, providing psychological support to victims, and Sudan’s dedication to protecting civilians and adhering to international law.
Al-Wakil called for serious international steps from the UN expert to ensure an end to violations, facilitate humanitarian aid, and protect vulnerable groups such as women, children, and the elderly. He stressed the urgency of addressing the suffering of the Sudanese people, advocating for the voices of victims to be heard and for the world to respond to the innocent caught in the conflict.
He also noted the Sudanese Human Rights Commission’s efforts to enhance accountability mechanisms for perpetrators of human rights violations in Sudan, aiming to provide justice to victims, end impunity, and ensure redress and compensation for those affected.
