Nouakchott: The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation participated in the 34th session of the Regional Conference for Africa of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). This significant event took place in the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott, from April 13 to 17, 2026, with agriculture ministers and senior officials from over 50 African countries in attendance.
According to Sudan News Agency, the conference serves as the highest regional platform for decision-making on agriculture and food security issues across the continent. The discussions focused on priorities for the upcoming phase and outlined strategies for transforming agricultural and food systems. Key topics included enhancing productivity, achieving sustainability, addressing climate change impacts, improving value chains, and strengthening food security.
The conference also emphasized promoting innovation and investment in the agricultural sector. This includes the adoption of climate-smart agriculture technologies, support for scientific research, and expanding financing opportunities for agricultural projects. Additionally, the conference highlighted the integration of youth into agricultural policies and programs in a comprehensive manner, marking a first at this level.
In line with these objectives, Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation Prof. Ismat Gurashi participated in the opening of the Global Food Security Forum on April 15, 2026, as part of the conference's activities.
