Khartoum: Minister of Energy and Oil Dr. Mohi-Eddin Naeem explained that the transformer station at Merowe Dam Power Plant was attacked by drones at approximately 3:30 am on Monday, January 13, 2025. Bless be to Allah, there were no casualties.
According to Sudan News Agency, Naeem stated that the attack resulted in the burning of the reactor of Al-Markhiyat line. Work is now underway to examine the switches and cables and assess the losses to urgently determine the needs.
The minister clarified that the power plant itself, including turbines, transformers, and auxiliary equipment, was not affected. However, the station went out of service due to the attack. Although one unit was later operated to supply the station and the Northern State, it subsequently went out of service as well. Efforts are currently being made to return it to operation.
The minister highlighted that the rest of the transmission lines, including Al-Atbara and Markhiyat lines, are pending examination by the engineers of the Electricity Transmission Company to evaluate the possibility of their return to service as soon as feasible.
Dr. Naeem emphasized the necessity of implementing further measures to protect vital facilities and installations within the country.
