Khartoum: Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation Professor Issmat Gurashi engaged in discussions with representatives of farmers from the Al-Rahad Agricultural Scheme to address significant challenges impacting production and essential services at the project. The meeting was graced by the presence of the Director of Al-Rahad Agricultural Authority.
According to Sudan News Agency, the discussions focused on the issues concerning the Mina pumping stations. The minister committed to resolving these challenges by collaborating with the electricity authorities. He emphasized the necessity of installing two solar-powered pumps to ensure a stable supply of drinking water to over 250 villages in the Al-Faw and Al-Butana areas.
Regarding the upcoming summer agricultural season, the minister assured that fuel supplies are stable and the necessary quantities have been approved. He directed the maintenance of dredgers and other essential project equipment through the Irrigation Sector's Mechanical and Electrical Directorate to prepare adequately for the season.
On the topic of financing, the minister highlighted the importance of providing financial support to all Al-Rahad Scheme farmers. This will be facilitated through the Sudanese Agricultural Bank in collaboration with financing entities to assist in setting up the summer season.
Addressing the electricity shortage, the minister mentioned that talks with the Minister of Energy and distribution authorities led to an agreement. This agreement will ensure the operation of main drinking water pumps during the current phase, until the Sennar Power Station becomes operational, thereby guaranteeing an uninterrupted water supply.
At the end of the meeting, the farmers expressed appreciation for the ministry's support, acknowledging its crucial role in aiding the project's recovery amid the challenging conditions in the country. They called for collaborative efforts to ensure agricultural stability and the success of the forthcoming summer season.
