Khartoum: The Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Professor Ismat Qurashi Abdullah, conducted an inspection visit to the Jebel Aulia Dam to assess the ongoing maintenance and rehabilitation work. This effort follows significant damage inflicted on the dam due to militia sabotage. The visit aligns with the ministry's continuous initiatives to revitalize the water sector.
According to Sudan News Agency, the Minister highlighted the essential contributions of irrigation sector workers in supporting the armed forces during the conflict. Their efforts were pivotal in safeguarding the reservoir, ensuring uninterrupted water flow, and maintaining the dam's integrity without flooding or shortages. He acknowledged the sacrifices of these workers, especially those at the Jebel Aulia Dam, and emphasized the necessity of continued support for maintenance activities.
The Minister also announced the completion of preliminary arrangements and coordination with the Advisory Board at the University of Khartoum and the Joint Technical Authority for Nile Waters. This collaboration aims to provide technical support and studies required for the maintenance and reactivation of the navigation channel.
In related developments, maintenance of the crane was undertaken, and the Undersecretary, Mr. Daw Al-Bait Abdul Rahman Mansour, committed support from the Mechanical and Electrical Department for the upkeep of the gates. The Minister directed the refurbishment of staff buildings and the tank rest area as well.
The Undersecretary briefed on the challenges posed by the Nile weed crisis affecting reservoir operations and safety. The Minister instructed the formation of a technical team from plant protection, the Hydraulic Research Center, and representatives from Khartoum and White Nile to analyze the situation and propose solutions.
This inspection is part of the Ministry's broader efforts to enhance water sector infrastructure, ensuring sustainable water services for the population.
