Khartoum: The National Human Rights Mechanism convened on Monday with UN Designated Expert on human rights in Sudan, Radhouane Nouicer, along with other mechanism members to discuss critical issues concerning the protection of civilians, humanitarian challenges, rights and freedoms, and trial-related references.
According to Sudan News Agency, the Minister of Justice and Head of the National Human Rights Mechanism, Dr. Abdullah Dirif, conveyed to the expert the government’s efforts and commitment to protecting civilians through multiple mechanisms. Among these is the Advisory Council for the Protection of Civilians, which has previously reported to the Security Council about Sudan’s human rights situation and is set to submit its semi-annual report.
Dr. Dirif highlighted a lack of necessary support for humanitarian affairs, noting the systematic destruction of infrastructure by the RSF militia. He pointed out that the United Nations has provided only 16% of the requested support, leaving the Sudanese government and allied nations to handle 85% of humanitarian efforts. He underscored the role of Sudanese citizens, driven by solidarity and tolerance, in overcoming the humanitarian crisis and called on the UN to fulfill its responsibilities.
The Minister emphasized that Sudan’s legal framework aligns with international standards, ensuring fair trials and legal aid for the accused. He called for concrete information on human rights violations for proper investigation, dismissing general allegations as unproductive. Dr. Dirif also questioned the expert’s characterization of sentences as harsh, explaining that punishments align with legal stipulations and principles.
The meeting also addressed the classification of rebel militias as terrorist groups, advocating for adherence to international conventions. Dr. Dirif urged a clear condemnation of countries, notably the UAE and Chad, that support these militias, violating Security Council Resolution 1591/2005. He stressed the importance of recognizing the impact of such support on Sudan’s prolonged suffering.
In conclusion, Dr. Dirif reaffirmed Sudan’s commitment to cooperating with international mechanisms and UN agencies, seeking justice and fairness for Sudan’s cause. He expressed hope for continued constructive cooperation based on the expert’s serious consideration of Sudan’s observations and statements.
