Islamic Committee Adopts Resolutions to Boost Humanitarian Efforts in Member States

Nouakchott: The Islamic Committee of the International Crescent has concluded its 39th regular session by adopting a series of resolutions aimed at enhancing humanitarian efforts across the member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. The session, held in Nouakchott, Mauritania, on July 9 and 10, 2026, focused on bolstering the capabilities of national Red Crescent and Red Cross societies.According to Union of OIC News Agencies, the committee emphasized the importance of ensuring safe and unhindered access to humanitarian aid, protecting relief and medical workers, and increasing urgent support for populations affected by crises. This includes efforts in regions such as Palestine, Sudan, Yemen, Syria, Lebanon, Afghanistan, the Sahel region of Africa, and the Lake Chad Basin.The Committee approved reports and work plans from its various departments and programs, including the International Crescent Department and the Islamic Forum for International Humanitarian Law. It also approved budgets fo r the regional offices, the Social Peacebuilding Center, the Irregular Migration Program, the Trainers Training Center, and other initiatives, including the Committee for Documenting Israeli Violations in Palestine and the OIC Red Network.A key resolution was the continued documentation of Israeli violations in Palestinian territories. The Committee plans to establish a specialized center for this purpose, in collaboration with Palestinian and Jordanian Red Crescent societies. It also called for the creation of safe humanitarian corridors and emphasized the need for the protection of civilians and the delivery of humanitarian aid.Member states were urged to fulfill their financial obligations to enable the committee to expand its humanitarian activities. A budget of US$2 million for 2026 was adopted alongside the annual work program.The session concluded with the re-election of Ambassador Ali Mahmoud Bouhadma as Chairman and Ambassador Babiker Ba as Vice-Chairman, both for a two-year term starting July 9, 2026. The Chairman was also tasked with organizing the 40th session's date and venue through necessary consultations.
