Khartoum: The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources, Engineer Daw-Al-Bait Abdel-Rahman, conducted a field tour to several irrigation divisions in the Gezira and Al-Managil Scheme. During the visit, the engineer assessed the water levels in the primary irrigation canals, including Al-Maturi, Wad Al-Mansi, Al-Fakhakhir, and 131 Shawwal divisions in Al-Managil.
According to Sudan News Agency, the Undersecretary announced that the purpose of the visit was to evaluate the flow of irrigation water in the canals following the initiation of water pumping on June 1st this year for the new agricultural season. He reported that 16 million cubic meters of water had been pumped. The Undersecretary affirmed the ministry’s commitment to increasing the water supply in the canals, aligned with the targeted agricultural areas.
He also noted the substantial damage incurred by the irrigation canals during the incursion of the Dagalo family’s rebel militias into Gezira State. Remediation work has been
ongoing, focusing particularly on peripheral areas that necessitate intervention, such as silt and weed clearance from the canals.
Meanwhile, the Director General of Irrigation Operations, Engineer Mufadal Al-Tayib, elaborated that the visit was intended to oversee the irrigation operations for the summer season, which commenced last April. He disclosed that bridge reinforcement efforts are 93% complete, with repairs currently in progress.
He highlighted that efforts to increase the water level in the irrigation canals are being tailored to the specific targeted areas. The Ministry of Irrigation is working to augment the number of mechanisms to expedite cleaning and silt removal processes. He assured farmers of the availability of water for all agricultural areas throughout the project.
