Khartoum: The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has announced a new grant financing of USD 47 million for Sudan, conditional on the settlement of the country’s arrears. This development marks a significant step towards supporting small producers in the nation.
According to Sudan News Agency, Minister of Finance Dr. Gebreil Ibrahim confirmed that procedures have commenced to clear the arrears, which will enable Sudan to access new financing for small producers in both the crop and animal resources sectors. Dr. Gebreil emphasized the government’s commitment to resilience and rural development projects aimed at increasing productivity of farmers and animal resources producers. He also highlighted efforts to enhance women’s capacities by organizing them into associations to facilitate direct access to international financing.
Dr. Rasha Omar, IFAD Country Director for Sudan, noted that her visit from 6 to 20 September is focused on strengthening cooperation, following up on the arrears settlement, and ensuring the full operation of IFAD programs across the country. She commended Sudan for its efforts to sustain IFAD activities despite numerous challenges, underscoring achievements in agricultural productivity, rural community organization, and the transition of irrigation systems from diesel to solar energy.
