Khartoum: The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health conducted a tour of several health facilities in Khartoum State, aiming to assess the damage and plan for rehabilitation. The tour included key establishments such as Khartoum Hospital, Al-Salam Italian Hospital for Cardiac Surgery, Soba Hospital, Stack Laboratory, the National Blood Bank, and notably, the Mycetoma Research Center.
According to Sudan News Agency, the visit highlighted the extensive destruction and systematic looting of laboratories and research centers. This included damage to modern medical equipment that had been acquired at significant costs to advance medical treatment within Sudan. The delegation particularly noted the damage to the Mycetoma Center, recognized globally as a leading reference in its field.
The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Finance stated that the visit aligns with the ministry’s strategic plan to rehabilitate health facilities and gradually restore services. Arrangements are currently underway to resume operations at Khartoum Hospital. He expressed gratitude towards the medical staff who have resumed their duties despite challenging conditions and affirmed the ministry’s commitment to reconstruction efforts.
Dr. Haitham commended Al-Salam Italian Hospital for Cardiac Surgery for its continued provision of free cardiology services, as well as pediatric treatment, nutrition, and immunization services, which serve over 60 patients daily even amidst conflict. He emphasized the significance of reactivating the Mycetoma Research Center, a global reference and beacon of scientific and humanitarian efforts. A comprehensive rehabilitation plan has been prepared by the center’s administration, with international organizations, including the World Health Organization, showing interest in its restoration.
The delegation also assessed the initial phase of Soba University Hospital’s rehabilitation, an institution crucial to the training of Sudanese doctors. The Undersecretary praised its administration and pledged further cooperation between the Ministry of Health and university hospitals.
