Khartoum: Minister of Health Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim affirmed that the state is committed to supporting maternal and child health through various interventions and the ‘Every Woman, Every Child, Everywhere’ initiative, describing it as a shared responsibility.
According to Sudan News Agency, this statement came during his online participation in a ministerial meeting organized by the World Health Organization (WHO) Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office, under the Maternal and Child Health Program, in cooperation with UNICEF and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
The Minister noted that the meeting focused on accelerating actions to improve the health of mothers, newborns, and children in high-burden countries in the region, with particular emphasis on reducing maternal and child mortality rates.
During the session, he reviewed the current status of maternal and child health in Sudan and engaged in discussions on national strategies to implement the 77th World Health Assembly resolution, while accelerating progress toward achieving health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The meeting also highlighted the importance of joint advocacy activities as part of the 2025 World Health Day campaign. WHO, UNICEF, and UNFPA reaffirmed their commitment to providing coordinated support for maternal, newborn, and child health in high-burden countries and discussed opportunities to mobilize resources and establish strategic partnerships.
Minister Haitham expressed gratitude to UN agencies and international and regional organizations for their continued attention to maternal and child health in Sudan, and presented a roadmap outlining the health sector’s priorities for the upcoming phase, with a focus on improving maternal and child health outcomes.
