Foreign Minister Engages with WFP on Strengthening Cooperation

Khartoum: Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Mohi-Eddin Salim, recently engaged in discussions with Carl Johan Orehus, Deputy Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), alongside his accompanying delegation. The meeting was also attended by Minister of Finance, Dr. Gebreil Ibrahim.

According to Sudan News Agency, the meeting focused on enhancing cooperation between Sudan and the WFP. Ambassador Salim expressed Sudan's commitment to strengthening collaboration in both humanitarian and development arenas. He welcomed the United Nations' gradual re-engagement in Khartoum, following improvements in stability, and expressed hope for other organizations to emulate this return.

The Foreign Minister assured the delegation of Sudan's readiness to tackle any obstacles hindering the program's work, while acknowledging the funding challenges faced by humanitarian operations. He also welcomed the newly appointed WFP Country Director in Sudan, Abdullah Al-Wardat, affirming the government's dedication to achieving mutual goals.

Minister of Finance, Dr. Gebreil Ibrahim, emphasized Sudan's ongoing partnership with the WFP, underscoring the importance of supporting development initiatives and local farmers, while highlighting the country's vast agricultural potential.

Mr. Orehus expressed satisfaction with his second visit to Sudan since November and revealed plans to relocate the WFP's operations to Khartoum in the near future. He commended the cooperation with the Sudanese government and noted that the program is currently assessing urgent needs to present to international donors.
