Foreign Minister Engages with UN Envoy on Combatting Sexual Violence

Khartoum: Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Ali Youssef met with Ms. Pramila Patten, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, in his office on Tuesday. The meeting focused on Sudan’s ongoing efforts to address the issue of sexual violence within its borders.

According to Sudan News Agency, Dr. Youssef emphasized the Sudanese government’s commitment to tackling sexual violence and supporting victims, despite the severe violations perpetrated by rebel militias. These militias have employed sexual violence as a tool of war, resorting to rape, sexual slavery, and forced marriage, affecting even children. Dr. Youssef reiterated Sudan’s willingness to work with the United Nations to strengthen protections for women and children and to ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.

Ms. Patten, representing the United Nations, stated that her visit was a gesture of solidarity with victims, especially women and girls. She expressed satisfaction with her discussions with Sudanese officials, highlighting their openness and dedication to addressing sexual violence. Ms. Patten noted the government’s strong resolve and readiness to collaborate with her office on renewing and signing a cooperation framework to further these efforts.
