Port sudan: The first meeting of the Minister of Justice Council for 2025 convened in Port Sudan’s Ministry of Justice Hall, with the session chaired by Howaida Ali Awad Al-Karim, the Undersecretary and Acting Minister of the Ministry of Justice. The meeting, attended by all council members either in person or remotely, aimed to address the Ministry’s vision for the country’s upcoming phase amidst ongoing national developments.
According to Sudan News Agency, Howaida emphasized the Ministry of Justice’s role as the state advisor, highlighting the critical link between Sudan’s stability and the rule of law. This connection underlines the Ministry’s duty to establish the country’s legal and constitutional frameworks and regulate legal performance.
The session reviewed several reports, most notably the strategic vision of the Ministry of Justice, shared by the Head of the Strategic Planning and Development Directorate. The vision aims for an autonomous judicial authority to uphold stability in Sudan through the rule of law and justice, emphasizing the necessity of legal jurisdiction to maintain integrity, transparency, and good governance.
Further contributions included a report from Sudan’s Solicitor General on international and regional lawsuits, presenting a forward-looking perspective on litigation. The Head of the Legislation Directorate discussed the draft of the tenth revised edition of Sudan’s laws, revealing that 270 out of 363 laws were updated post the ninth edition, with plans to provide electronic and translated versions for wider access.
Additionally, the Head of the Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law Directorate reported on Sudan’s participation in the 59th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva. The report noted that six statements were submitted and well-received by the Sudanese Mission in Geneva, underscoring the need for enhanced coordination between the National Human Rights Mechanism and the Human Rights Council.
The meeting concluded with the Council praising the efforts of specialized Directorates and legal administrations in war-affected and host states, acknowledging their significant contributions during the country’s challenging times.
