Khartoum: The Higher Council for Environment and Natural Resources convened a Board of Directors meeting this Saturday morning at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) hall in Khartoum to discuss the project focused on enhancing capacity for transparency in climate change action.
According to Sudan News Agency, the Secretary-General of the Council, Ms. Magda Ahmed, stated that the project is funded by the Global Environment Facility in collaboration with UNDP and is executed by the Council. Ms. Ahmed emphasized the ongoing partnership with UNDP to fulfill Sudan's global climate commitments and expressed optimism about the approval of the proposed plan and budget, which are crucial for executing the remaining activities over the next 18 months.
UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Surayo Buzurukova welcomed the project board members and highlighted the successful completion of a four-day greenhouse gas inventory training in May, conducted in collaboration with UNDP and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). She mentioned that the training was instrumental in enhancing the capacity of focal points across various ministries, paving the way for the project's implementation in 2026 and 2027.
Ms. Buzurukova also noted that the project's timeline has been extended to December 31, 2027, allowing additional time to finalize all planned interventions. This extension was granted on an exceptional basis to ensure comprehensive project completion.
Project coordinator Hiyam Ahmed presented the 2025 performance report, outlining the challenges encountered during implementation. Additionally, Project Director Dr. Bushra Hamid shared the 2026 national work plan designed to accelerate project execution. Dr. Hamid urged the board to approve the 2025 results and adopt the 2026 plan following discussion and necessary amendments.
