Port sudan: The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim, called on the World Health Organization (WHO) to enhance its contribution to delivering medicine supplies to Darfur states, particularly to the besieged city of El-Fashir.
According to Sudan News Agency, the Undersecretary emphasized that WHO was one of the most important strategic partners in developing Sudan’s health system, urging coordinated efforts to tackle the health challenges posed by the current situation. This statement was made during a meeting held at his office in Port Sudan, attended by WHO representative Dr. Shibl Sahbani and Ministry of Health leaders.
The meeting focused on addressing obstacles facing the health sector and mechanisms for continuing support, particularly in delivering medicines and vaccinations to areas difficult to access due to the rebel Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militias. Dr. Haitham stressed the importance of prioritizing health, emphasizing his responsibility to Sudanese citizens everywhere and the Ministry’s commitment to implementing recommendations and providing care across Sudan.
Discussions also covered interventions to combat epidemics, with a focus on the emergence of cholera cases in several states. The parties agreed to cooperate closely to mitigate its impact through vaccination and field control programs.
The WHO representative praised the ongoing coordination with the Ministry of Health, highlighting the worsened humanitarian crisis due to the siege on El-Fashir. He affirmed the continuation of efforts to deliver supplies to affected areas and combat cholera in the Tawila area.
