Consumer Price Index Drops in January 2026 Indicating Decrease in Monthly Inflation

Khartoum: The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for January 2026 recorded a significant decrease, standing at 606,095.49 points, compared to 631,072.80 points in December 2025. This represents a monthly decrease of 3.96%, highlighting a downward trend in inflation for the start of the year.According to Sudan News Agency, the CPI for the food and beverages group showed minimal movement, recording 260,340.91 points, which reflects a slight monthly decline of 0.02% from December 2025. Despite the monthly decrease, the annual inflation rate tells a different story.The overall CPI showed a substantial increase of 60.26% when compared to January 2025. The food and beverages group experienced an even higher annual increase of 61.52%. Additionally, the data revealed a disparity between urban and rural areas, with urban regions experiencing a 72.12% inflation rate, while rural areas recorded a lower rate of 54.08%.The base year for these calculations is 2007, providing a long-term perspective on the inflation trends in the region.
