Khartoum: The Attorney General, Intisar Ahmed Abdel-Aal, Chairperson of the National Committee for the Investigation of Crimes and Violations of National and International Humanitarian Law, had a meeting with the Representative of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Sudan, Ms. Li Fungin, at her office. First Assistant Attorney General, Kamal Mahjoub Ahmed, was also in attendance.
According to Sudan News Agency, the meeting addressed several issues of mutual concern, primarily focusing on the human rights situation in Sudan and the violations against civilians and infrastructure. The Attorney General elaborated on the National Committee’s role in probing these violations, detailing the Public Prosecution’s measures to ensure justice. These measures include surpassing territorial jurisdiction restrictions, utilizing Criminal Form (8) before filing a case, and maintaining confidentiality, especially in cases involving violence against women.
The Attorney General further emphasized the assignment of female prosecutors and police officers to handle cases of violations against women, alongside other initiatives to facilitate survivors’ access to justice. She expressed a willingness to cooperate with the OHCHR in Sudan.
In response, the OHCHR representative highlighted the Public Prosecution’s crucial role amid the ongoing conflict, commending the efforts of both the Prosecution and the National Committee in investigating violations. She also conveyed her Office’s readiness to collaborate on cases of enforced disappearance and violence against women.
The meeting concluded with both parties affirming the importance of enhancing joint efforts in protecting and promoting human rights.
