Khartoum: The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, expressed his great welcome for the address delivered by the Prime Minister of Sudan's Transitional Government before the United Nations Security Council, and the comprehensive peace initiative it contained. The initiative reflects a clear commitment to stopping the war and alleviating humanitarian suffering, while preserving Sudan's unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
According to Sudan News Agency, the Advisor and Spokesperson for the Arab League's Secretary-General affirmed that the Arab League values the highly important political, humanitarian, and security messages included in the initiative. It sees it as a serious and constructive framework that warrants positive engagement as a principal part of any comprehensive solution path and efforts aimed at restoring security and stability in Sudan, preventing any threat to its national unity or the disintegration of its social fabric.
Adviser Rushdi added that the Arab League supports the initiative's call for a comprehensive ceasefire, protection of civilians, ensuring the flow of humanitarian aid, addressing the situations of displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees, disarmament, and implementing disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR) programmes. This prepares the necessary groundwork for rebuilding trust, mending the social fabric, and strengthening the foundations of the unified Sudanese state.
He also clarified that the Arab League emphasizes the importance of engaging with the initiative's proposals for confidence-building measures political, security, economic, and social based on the principles of transitional justice, reparations, and national reconciliation. This enhances the chances for sustainable peace, preserves the unity of society and the state, and prevents the reproduction of violence or a slide towards paths of division or fragmentation.
He expressed the Arab League's welcome for the initiative's emphasis on national ownership of the political process and on launching a comprehensive intra-Sudanese dialogue during the transitional period. This dialogue should lead to a national consensus on state administration and governance within the framework of a united Sudan, culminating in free and fair elections under international observation, fulfilling the aspirations of the Sudanese people for democratic transformation and stability.
