Khartoum: State Minister at the Ministry of Finance, Mohamed Nour Abdel-Daim, affirmed the ministry's support for the General Federation of Sudan Workers' Trade Unions' plans to develop the 'Workers' Support Portfolio' and transform it from a consumer-oriented portfolio into a comprehensive productive and development-oriented portfolio by the end of 2027.
According to Sudan News Agency, the minister made the remarks during a meeting on Thursday with Dr. President of the Federation, Sir Al-Khatim Al-Amin Abdel-Gadir, and his accompanying delegation to discuss the economic and service conditions of workers and mechanisms for addressing the effects of the current circumstances. He affirmed the ministry's support for structural and financial reform programs at the Workers' Bank, as well as coordination with state investment institutions and funds to provide the necessary resources.
He also called for benefiting from opportunities and expertise available through international institutions and cooperating with national initiatives, foremost among them the 'My Commodity' (Silaati) Program.
For his part, the Federation President explained that the Workers' Portfolio is based on a partnership with 17 commercial and government banks, led by the Workers' Bank and the Central Bank of Sudan. He called on the Ministry of Finance to coordinate with major state-owned companies to explore opportunities for injecting investment deposits and providing liquidity that would enable the Workers' Bank, Basigat Company, and the Workers' Microfinance Company to implement productive and development projects for workers affected by the war.
The Federation also reviewed its efforts in the areas of popular and trade-union diplomacy, including arrangements for a visit by a senior delegation from the International Trade Union Confederation. The visit resulted in the submission of a detailed report to the UN Security Council on the situation of workers and the humanitarian conditions in Sudan.
The Federation also continues to hold prominent regional positions, including the presidency of the East African Workers' Federation and the vice presidency of the Central Council of the International Federation of Arab Trade Unions.
The meeting concluded with the trade-union delegation emphasizing the importance of integrating official and trade-union efforts to support reconstruction and achieve economic and social recovery.
