North Kordofan Wali Engages with WFP Leadership on Humanitarian Coordination

Khartoum: North Kordofan Wali Abdel-Khalig Abdel-Latif on Monday met with the acting Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), Carl Skau, alongside the WFP Country Director for Sudan and the programme's director for the Kordofan and White Nile sector. The state's Humanitarian Aid Commissioner was also present during the meeting.According to Sudan News Agency, Abdel-Khalig expressed his welcome to the WFP delegation, highlighting the visit as a demonstration of the programme's interest in North Kordofan and its commitment to evaluating the humanitarian situation. He acknowledged the crucial role of WFP interventions in supporting citizens and internally displaced persons (IDPs).The Wali provided the delegation with an overview of the state government's initiatives to deliver essential services to citizens and IDPs. He emphasized that El-Obeid is accommodating significant numbers of IDPs and other arrivals, necessitating enhanced humanitarian coordination and increased assistance.Furthermore, the Wali reiterated the state government's dedication to bolstering collaboration and coordination with WFP to enhance its capacity to address the escalating humanitarian needs in North Kordofan effectively.The WFP delegation stated that the visit's objectives included engaging with programme staff and evaluating efforts to reactivate WFP's logistics warehouses in El-Obeid. These warehouses serve as a crucial hub for the broader Kordofan region and Darfur. The delegation also planned to assess the humanitarian conditions on the ground and the extent of assistance being provided, emphasizing its commitment to securing additional support and humanitarian aid for Sudan, particularly El-Obeid.Discussions during the meeting also covered the potential expansion of cooperation to aid farmers in returning to their land and the implementation of school feeding projects.North Kordofan Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Dr. Mohamed Ismail Abdel-Razeq commented that the meeting focused on strengthening huma nitarian operations, expanding assistance, and supporting services for IDPs and other new arrivals. It also aimed at enhancing coordination between the state government and WFP to address humanitarian needs more effectively and improve response strategies in the forthcoming period.
