Minni Minnawi Calls for Political Will to End Sudan Conflict

New York:Governor of the Darfur Region, Minni Arko Minnawi, emphasized the necessity of political will and addressing the root causes of the crisis to end the war in Sudan. He highlighted the importance of creating conditions for the return of internally displaced persons and refugees, and initiating an inclusive Sudanese dialogue without exclusion to achieve lasting peace and a stable state.

According to Sudan News Agency, Minnawi attended an event organized by the Darfur Sons Association in New York, where he explained his participation in the United Nations General Assembly meetings as part of the Sudanese delegation led by General Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan. Due to political cross-currents, the President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council was unable to deliver Sudan's address, with the Foreign Minister speaking instead.

Minnawi outlined that any truce or ceasefire agreed upon by the Sudanese government depends on three key conditions: the withdrawal of foreign fighters, the removal of armed elements from cities, and disarmament. These measures are deemed essential to enable civilians to resume normal life. He also reiterated the government's strong opposition to any initiatives that may lead to the establishment of a parallel state or the partitioning of Sudan.

The Governor expressed skepticism about the current demands for a truce, citing the ongoing situation on the ground. He accused the Rapid Support Forces militia of committing extensive violations in Darfur, including the destruction of El-Fashir and Zamzam Camp and the rape of civilians. He noted that the conflict has displaced most of the region's population, leaving only two million out of an original 12 million.

Minnawi criticized the UAE's involvement in mediation efforts within the international Quad, arguing that Abu Dhabi cannot be a neutral mediator while providing logistical and military support to parties fighting against the Sudanese people. He reiterated that resolving the conflict requires genuine political will to address the crisis's roots and foster an inclusive dialogue among Sudanese stakeholders.
